Ebubennem Megalyn Ann Echikunwoke was born on May 28, 1983 in Spokane, Washington. Her father, Mark Onigwe Versato Echikunwoke, was a Nigerian immigrant and survivor of the Biafran War, while her mother Anita Laurie is of German, Irish, Scottish, and English descent. After her father died of liver cancer when she was four, her family moved to the Navajo Nation in Chinle, Arizona. She was discovered at age 14 while performing at an arts academy summer camp and began acting professionally at 15 with a guest role on The Steve Harvey Show (1998). She later starred in Spyder Games (2001), 24 (2001–2002), and That '70s Show (2004–2005).
